V-Club Villach: V for variety!

€€€

V-Club Villach should be seen as an overall concept – and it consists of several parts. One part is the Asia Club dance floor, spanning 2,000 square metres, where house, club, R & B, electro and dance music are played.

The Tanzarena Colosseum, furnished in ancient Roman style with seating and boxes, features disco fox, dance music, pop and classics. Alongside show dance events, the location also hosts hypnotism shows and entertainment with live acts. V-Club Villach also operates the V-Bowl bowling centre with eight modern, fully automated lanes. From here, you can go straight to the V-Lounge, a cosy after-work venue. Cocktails and finger food are served inside and on the palm terrace – alongside relaxed sounds.

Sternberg: a power place – with catering

The Sternberg is 733 metres high, and is where Count von Sternberg built his proprietary church of St Georg around 1170. In 1285, it was designated a parish church. The mountain was already a place of worship in the Middle Ages.

In the mid-twelfth century, the noble Sternberg family constructed the castle of the same name, of which only the ruins remain today. The historical stonework can be reached via a woody forest trail – when you get there, however, you won’t see a castle, but rather a residential and seminar building. The renovated Gasthof Messnerei restaurant can also be found on the Sternberg. Walkers, hikers and mountain bikers like to head here to enjoy sophisticated, straightforward food adapted to the time of year. The restaurant is quaint and cosy and – just like the mountain – a real power place.

Hauptplatz Villach: where life, medicine and art converge

Hauptplatz Villach is the central meeting point for locals and visitors in the city on the Drava river. Everyday life plays out here under the commanding steeple of the parish church of St Jakob – first documented in 1136 – which, at 94 metres, is the tallest church steeple in Carinthia.

Eateries, offices and businesses are located around the centre, which was converted into a pedestrianised area in the 1980s. At the west of Hauptplatz, two buildings stand out in particular: the building in which doctor and philosopher Paracelsus lived from 1502 to 1516, and the birthplace of Austrian anatomist and bacteriologist Anton Ghon. There is also a modern attraction in the form of the brightly coloured 3D artwork that adorns the district-heating construction site on Hauptplatz.

Stofflwirt: always following the culinary calendar

Sitting 250 metres above Lake Ossiach – this is where you can find the Stofflwirt. From here, you have a fantastic view across the lake, the Ossiacher Tauern, the Karawanks and the Julian Alps.

But it isn’t just the view to the horizon that will put a smile on your face; the view of the cosy inn will, too: 115-year-old ‘Stoffl-Stadl’ timbers, for example, have been worked into the Stoffl counter. Alongside the counter, there is a panoramic winter garden, a sitting room, a heated, covered terrace and a sun terrace. There is also a children’s play area. Fresh, seasonal products are used for the (traditional) Carinthian food, which is why the menu follows the culinary calendar – from lamb at Easter to chanterelles in July to duck breast in January.

House beer, dark beer, wheat beer, shandy or non-alcoholic – and plenty of other varieties … the Villacher Brauerei has the right beer to suit any taste.

Since innkeeper and butcher Johann Fischer converted the existing Steinbier brewery into a kettle brewery in 1858, the traditional Carinthian brewery has been making brewing history. In the exceptionally cosy Villacher Brauhaus adjoining the brewery itself, you can dive into Austrian beer culture and enjoy local culinary treats – including vegetarian versions. Outdoors, there is a beer garden surrounded by shady chestnut trees.

Kyutea: bubble tea with a crunch

Hot on the heels of The Wok, Kyutea is the second culinary project from owner Xiao Li Yang. The restaurateur brings the bubble tea trend to the heart of Villach city centre.

Fruit tea and milk tea are also served alongside the cold drink, known internationally as boba or pearl milk tea. The flavours available for this bubble tea are as exotic as the sensation when you hold these little pearls in your mouth for the first time. You can choose from passion fruit, cherry blossom or Hawaii Trip, for example – and the colour of the drinks is just as vibrant. Bubble tea is originally from Taiwan and is based on sweetened green or black tea with milk or fruit syrup and prepared like a milkshake. The tapioca pearls provide a crunch.

stöcklWEINgarten: indulgence boutique for wine and oil connoisseurs

Why do both St Urban and St Peter play a role in Stöcklweingarten? It is assumed that the earliest settlers here were winegrowers and fishers, and that they therefore prayed not only to the ‘saint of wine’, protector of vineyards, but also to the patron saint of fishers.

It is suggested that the vineyards were located on the slopes in front of the Gerlitzen massif. The Stöcklweingarten vineyard name is first documented in 1365. The indulgent stöcklWEINgarten shop is located in the town of the same name in the heart of the region of the Feldkirchen/Lake Ossiach winegrowing association. You can sample and purchase Carinthian wines at this gourmet boutique. They also curate a selection of oils of the highest quality, as well as choice specialities including chocolate, pasta and spirits.
