Zur Brezn: cult status on the (culinary) scene

As far as locals are concerned, the Zur Brezn bar isn’t just the oldest and most (in)famous pub in Augsburg, but also the one with the biggest cult status. Guests have been making this their local since 1959.

Whether you stop by for an after-work drink or settle in for a relaxed evening, the institution is the perfect place to switch off and spend time with friends and acquaintances. Since restaurateur and night owl Christian Korte took over the establishment, the place has acquired even more of a club/pub feel. With live music or various playlists, and a large variety of events – including Majorca parties and football matches shown on the big screens. It’s also entirely possible that you’ll run into piercing or tattoo artists while you’re there … anything is possible; nothing is compulsory.

Stadtdschungel: follow this green alleyway …

The Mettlochgässchen connecting Annastrasse and Philippine-Welser-Strasse in the pedestrian area was transformed into a palm-lined alleyway overnight – ‘urban jungle’ hits the mark when talking about the tropical installation in Augsburg city centre.

Under the motto ‘Stadtdschungel’ (city jungle), Stadtsparkasse Augsburg is highlighting the importance of sustainability. Various local organisations and institutions have supported the project. With enthusiastic aid from the THW technical relief agency and the voluntary fire brigade, a wooden construction was built, upon which seventy plants, some of them exotic, are mounted. The plants were loaned by the botanical gardens. There is also a campaign hashtag for those who want to participate in the campaign on Instagram: #stadtgewaechs.

Hofgarten: quiet break with stone dwarfs

Hidden behind Augsburg cathedral, the Augsburg Hofgarten opens out into an oasis of calm – at the heart of the historical old town. This location is popular with locals, who have been meeting here since 1965.

It was once part of the neighbouring bishop’s residence. The garden complex is enclosed by railings and was designed between 1739 and 1744 in baroque and rococo style by master builder Johann Caspar Bagnato. The space includes box bushes, a pool surrounded by stone sculptures and dwarfs – large, grotesque figures in sandstone – a fountain, benches and garden chairs. You can simply let your mind wander in this urban retreat. If you enjoy reading but didn’t bring a book along, you can make use of the public library cupboard.

Rote-Torwall-Anlagen: age-old witness in red

The Red Gate is part of Augsburg’s fortifications. First documented in 1223, it served as the most southerly city gate and as an access point for the Via Claudia towards Tyrol and Italy.

It has been reconstructed, expanded, heightened, developed and redesigned over the years. In the nineteenth century, the city pulled the walls down – the Red Gate, however, stayed standing. Its name derives from the colour of the tower. Around 1900, a green space was created from the moat; the open-air theatre was added in 1929 – one of the largest in southern Germany with 2,100 seats. Within the scope of the 1985 state garden show, the town also created the Augsburg herb garden. Along with the bridge, outer gate, bastion and moat, the structure forms the Rote-Torwall-Anlage.

Augsburg cathedral:

From the city centre, you can’t miss the 62-metre-high towers of Augsburg cathedral in the north.

Excavations show that, where Roman housing still stood in the fifth century AD, the first large church-like structure with crypt and central nave arose between the fifth and eighth centuries. A new Carolingian building followed, whose dome collapsed in 994. Over time, Augsburg cathedral took its unmistakable form: to the west, the old Ottonian building with unplastered masonry and the two towers; in the east, immediately adjacent, the towering, white-plastered Gothic choir with significant portals in the south and north adorned with statues. In the year 2000, the Diocesan Museum – home to important works of art – was opened. Tip: the public cathedral tours!
